Condition:
A number of the townÂ’s smaller structures such as small out buildings, fences, cabins, sheds, and root cellars are continuing to deteriorate due to lack of funding for maintenance. A minor earthquake has caused damage to chimneys and plaster walls. The completion of a new transmission line has reduced the number of pole structures in the historic district. The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Foundation continues to raise funds for the Hotel Meade. A new roof has been completed at a cost of $10,000, the upper porch has been repaired and a new fascia installed for a further $4,000. Further repairs are necessary as water damage resulting from the failing roof accelerated the deterioration of the interior of the structure. Also the Masons have contributed funds for the stabilization of the Masonic Lodge. The Montana State Heritage Commission in partnership with the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is developing ways to address artifact collections management issues. The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking a Save Americas Treasure matching grant of $300,000 to address the preservation needs of six structures. A historic architect has been hired to update a 1991 assessment of 31 structures as well as to complete an assessment of 75 buildings and structures. It is estimated that to bring all structures into a good state of preservation would cost more than $1.5 million.
