Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
Coufal (1130-1350 AD) is a major village of the Central Plains tradition. Twenty-two earth lodges of the prehistoric Indians of the Itskari Phase have been excavated, bridging the gap between late prehistoric villagers and the origins of the Pawnee.
