Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
This large prehistoric village and burial area of the Oneota Culture was first noted by Lewis and Clark in 1804.
Tribal stewards report continued erosion on the site. The landmark plaque was stolen, but there was no damage to the archeological site itself.
The NPS has provided a new NHL plaque to replace the one stolen, but it has not yet been placed at the site.
