Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 9, 1960):
One of the most traditional of the Eastern Pueblos, Taos has borrowed from Anglo- and Spanish-American cultures over centuries of contact, while retaining its cultural integrity and identity as a community. In the 17th century, the Pueblo was a center of resistence to Spanish rule which drove the Spanish from the area for 12 years.

Condition:
Torrential rains have taken a toll on the San Geronimo church and many homes in the pueblo. Incompatible alterations and additions threaten the integrity of the Landmark which is also a World Heritage Sites.

Due to the rains the pueblos Historic Preservation Office has built berms along the rivers edge to keep the water away from the homes.
