Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 23, 1963):
Residence (1863-85) of Dr. Hough, the father of American forestry. He was the first Federal forestry official and the author of the first American book on forestry. In 1855, Hough wrote the bill creating New York's vast Adirondack Forest Preserve.
