Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
From 1850 to 1852, this 2-1/2 story frame house was the residence of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of a widely influential indictment of slavery. Her book, UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, OR LIFE AMONG THE LOWLY, was written here in 1851.

Bowdoin College has bought the property and turned the hotel into a dormitory. The Stowe house itself is in serious need of repair.
