Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
From 1884 until his death, this converted carriage house was the studio of Winslow Homer (1836-1910), who once remarked that he worked "in utter independence of schools and masters." One of America's best-known and best-loved artists, Homer was noted for his Civil War scenes, landscapes, genre works, and particularly for his powerful paintings of the sea.
