Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 9, 1960):
On Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River, the site was developed by the French (1726), captured by the British (1759), surrendered to the Americans after the Revolutionary War, and recaptured by the British (1813). Its strategic location made control of the fort important to France, Great Britain, and the Iroquois Confederation, as well as, later, to the United States.

Condition:
1. Proposed development at the edge of Fort Niagara State Park threatens the viewshed at the approach to the park. The multi-story condominium would be out out of character with the Park and surrounding landscape. 2. Deteriorating roofs, windows, wiring, masonry

Recommendation/Change since last report:
1. Deny zoning variance at municipal level for multi-story condominium 2. Replace shingles on 5 structures 3. Rewire 6 structures 4. Repair deteriorated masonry
