Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 23, 1962):
Site of a fierce battle between American militiamen attempting to relieve Fort Stanwix and a combined force of British Loyalists and Indians. Although the American patriot force failed to raise the siege at that time, the unseasoned militia's unwillingness to be beaten ultimately led to the abondonment of the siege and the British threat to the Mohawk Valley.

Condition:
Threats include the purchase and development of adjacent property by private individuals. Erosion has occurred within alignment of a road bed identified in an 1848 engraving as an original military road. There is a lack of prioritization within critical criteria for funding during fiscal restrictions of the state fiscal year.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
A boundary study is needed to codify primary, secondary, and tertiary areas of the battlefield and priorities for acquisition. The estimated cost is $20,000 through SUNY-CESF or Cornell University. Restoration requires Phase 2 of Oriskany's Cultural Landscape Report which would outline treatment recommendations. The estimated cost is $22,000 through a partnership with SUNY-CESF. HABS/HAER documentation should record all monuments for formal documentation and inventory purposes. The estimated cost is $11,000 through SUNY-CESF.
