Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
Begun in 1825, the Miami and Erie Canal was one of Ohio's two major artificial waterways. It stretched from Cincinnati to Toledo, by way of Dayton; the canal brought settlers into western Ohio and provided access to markets for farmers. The Deep Cut is a vestige of the Canal.

Condition:
There are no current threats. The landmark is in good condition.

The Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District received a grant to install a trail on the west bank of the canal towpath.
