Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
Begun in 1825, the Miami and Erie Canal was one of Ohio's two major artificial waterways. It stretched from Cincinnati to Toledo, by way of Dayton; the canal brought settlers into western Ohio and provided access to markets for farmers. The Deep Cut is a vestige of the Canal.

Condition:
There are no current threats due to maintenance and law enforcement through the Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District. The landmark is in good condition.

Funding has been requested through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for a trail enhancement project.
