Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
At this ancient heiau, in the summer of 1791, King Kamehameha the Great sacrificed Keoua, his chief rival for the kingship of the Hawaiian Islands. This event led to the unification of the Hawaiian Islands as a single kingdom under the rule of Kamehameha I.
