Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 23, 1966):
From 1802 to about 1817, this was the home of William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), college professor and author, whose elementary school texts--the ECLECTIC READERS--were used for more than 70 years in schools in every part of the United States.
