Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
This hilltop area with large surrounding earthworks was built and inhabited by people of the Hopewell culture (c. 300 BC-250 AD). Hundreds of years after the site had been abandoned by the Hopewell, the Fort Ancient people (1200-1600 AD) settled in the area.

Condition:
Fort Ancient is one of the best preserved of the large earthworks built by the Hopewell culture.

The Ohio Historical Society has recieved Save America's Treasures grants to fix drainage from Depression Era conservation work. Archeology started for compliance with this work has found new, previously unrecorded, features of the site. The site was included in Ohio Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks nomination that has been included on the U.S. tentative list for the World Heritage List.
