Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
This is a frontier house of logs, occupied (1829-44) by Sequoyah (George Gist), the teacher who in 1821 invented a syllabary which made it possible to write and read the Cherokee language. The giant California sequoia trees are named for him.

Condition:
Sequoyah’s Cabin continues to serve as a state museum and interpretive center. The NHLis in satisfactory condition.

In 2004, a new roof was installed on the WPA shelter building which protects Sequoyah’s Cabin.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
Currently there is no fire protection for Sequoyah’s Cabin. It is suggested that an Inergen or MR-200 fire prevention system be installed. Estimated cost $40,000.
