Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 4, 1961):
Founded in 1879 by Brig. Gen Richard H. Pratt, a Civil War officer and veteran of the Indian campaigns in the West, the school pioneered in Federal programs for Indian education, and was a model for similar schools built elsewhere.
