Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
This stone house was the birthplace of Robert Fulton (1765-1815), artist, civil engineer, and inventor. Fulton worked on the development of canal systems and engineering; he is perhaps best remembered for designing the CLERMONT, the first commercially successful American steamboat, launched in 1807.
