Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
Opened in 1857, this is the country's oldest musical auditorium retaining its original form and serving its original purpose. Architect Napoleon Le Brun was influenced by European opera houses, and designed an auditorium famed for its acoustical properties and fine sight lines. Since the turn of the 20th century, the "Grand Old Lady of Broad Street" has been the home of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
