Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
Noted American painter Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) lived in this mid-19th century 4-story townhouse almost his entire life. His unrelentingly realistic, often uncomplimentary portraits eschew surface expression to focus on inner truth and character. Walt Whitman initially disliked his 1887 portrait, but came to understand that "The more I get to realize it, the profounder seems its insight."

Condition:
The building now houses the city’s Mural Arts Program. There is limited, but progressive damage occurring to the building, including water penetration and the deterioration of windows.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
The Landmark needs a condition assessment and estimate of costs for restoration.
