Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 19, 1960):
This was the residence of John Caldwell Calhoun (1782-1850), best remembered for his vigorous defense of States' Rights. His long political career included the U.S. House and Senate, service as Secretary of War and Secretary of State, and the office of Vice President.

Condition:
The landmark is in good condition.

The landmark received recognition from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the AIA Award on the restoration 2004. It also received the S.C.SHPO Governor's Award for its restoation in 2004
