Pinson Mounds

Pinson, Tennessee
County of Madison.
National Register Number: 66000727
Resource type: Site.
The threat level was Watch in
2005.
Congressional District: TN-8 Certified Local Government: NO

Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
The site, which includes two large temple mounds, an effigy mound, and earthworks, was occupied during several archeological periods, beginning as early as 5000 BC.

Condition:
Pinson Indian Mounds Group are within a state park, however, 1/3 of the archeological site is controlled by the state's Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry. The Forestry-controlled portion has a tree farm, which is damaging the site. Despite offers by a local non-profit to purchase the remaining acrage, the Division of Forestry intends to remain on the site and plant an additional 8,000 trees. The tree planting and removal on the mounds damage the integrity of the archeological site and isn't sensitive to Native American concerns.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
Local preservation orgranizations (Tenn. Comission of Indian Affairs, Tenn. Ancient Sites Conservancy) are lobbying for legislative action to protect the mounds. SERO recommends continued monitoring and moving the Pinson Mounds to Watch list status.
