Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
One of the earliest and most important lumber-producing centers on the Pacific Coast. Still active, with a variety of architectural styles, Port Gamble exemplifies the mid-19th century company-owned town.

Condition:
The townsite owner continue to rehabilitate and rent residences and commercial buildings on a one by one basis. New energy is apparent as a result of this work. Owners also sponsor regional festivals and Saturday markets on site, efforts that also create new interest and visitation to the town. The NPS provides technical assistance to the owners of the Landmark on a request basis, dealing with issues of planning and building and site rehabilitation. These requests have generally come twice or three times a year recently.
