Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 20, 1961):
Independence Rock is a well-known natural landmark on the Oregon Trail, 1900 feet long and 850 feet wide. Numerous travelers painted, carved, or wrote their names on its surface over the years.

Condition:
The state park is in generally good condition. The NHL continues to face threats from overuse and vandalism. Lichen growth threatens a number of the inscriptions.
