Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 5, 1961):
Of the 15 annual meetings held by mountain men fo the Rocky Mountain fur trade from 1825 to 1840, this was the most popular rendezvous site. The annual spring trading fair held here attracted Euro-American traders and trappers, including Kit Carson and Jim Bridger, and Native Americans.

Condition:
Natural gas exploration is occurring in the vicinity of the site. Minerals, including oil and gas, beneath the NHL are privately owned and are not, at this time, leased for development. A substantial portion, 880 of the 1200 acres, of the NHL is part of the 7 Mile River Ranch. The ranch is divided into 20-some parcels ranging from 65-290 acres with about half having been sold for high-end housing development. Restricted covenants are in place to protect the site from inappropriate development.

Natural gas exploration and development continue to threaten this resource.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
This site will continue to need monitoring to watch for incompatible development.
