Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
Site of the first lighthouse in North America, which was destroyed by the British in 1776. The reconstructed 89-foot tower is made up of rubble stone, granite, and brick.
Condition:
No threats. Property is in satisfactory condition.
