On January 10, 1901, at Spindletop, a little knoll of land rising out of a swampy prairie, the first great oil gusher roared in. Lucas Gusher signalled the opening of the vast oil deposits of the Texas Gulf coastal plain and Louisiana to development and the beginning of the modern era of the American petroleum industry.

Condition:
The NHL encompasses the site of the original and later historic oil strikes. The 1936 Texas Centennial Marker, 1951 marker, and the 1967 NHL marker are all located outside the boundaries of the district. The original site has subsided and is surrounded by marshland and water. The 1936 and 1951 markers were located at their present site in 1976. The monuments are located at the Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum nearby. The Museum building is currently closed due to damage sustained during the 2005 Hurricane Rita.
