Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
Poet, newspaper editor and critic Bryant lived here until early manhood, and made his summer residence here in the later years of his life (1865-78). He composed some of his best known poems in this house, including "Thanatopsis," written when he was just seventeen.
