Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
From 1916 until his death, this two story frame house was the residence of Gari Melchers (1860-1932), distinguished landscape and portrait painter. Among Melchers' work are the murals, PEACE and WAR, which he completed for the Library of Congress.

There are no immediate threats to the property.

New public event and collections storage facility completed in 2006 with the aid of $4 million in state capital funding.
