Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
Founded January 1, 1943, on the Pajarito Plateau of the Jemez Mountains for the purpose of developing an instrument of war--the nuclear fission bomb--Los Alamos continues to be a center for research on nuclear weapons and peaceful applications of atomic energy.

Condition:
Long-term maintenance and its continuing review continues on all buildings in the district, both publicly and privately owned.
