Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
Cahokia, occupied from 600-1500 AD, was the largest Mississippian Period community in eastern North America. It was placed on the World Heritage List in 1982.
Condition:
As in the past, this NHL continues to be threatened by proposed storm water retention projects by the Corps of Engineers.
Residential, commercial, and flood control development continue in area, but state support has improved. Additional land acquisition funds have been approved, and the preparation of a master management plan is anticipated.
