Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
The oldest and deepest in the state, Soudan Mine's opening in 1884 marked the beginning of the exploitation of one of the richest iron ore deposits in the world and the emergence of Minnesota as the leading iron-ore producing state in America. The mine remained active until 1962; a number of its original buildings survive.

Condition:
Recent work at the site includes installation of an accessible elevator and removal of trees and shrubs in the open pit area. Rehabilitation of the Drill Shop are in the planning stage for summer 2007, and rehabilitation of the hoist motor starter is scheduled for fall 2006. The site faces physical deterioration in the future. The crusher/trestle is in need of restoration, although the steel beams of the trestle are rehabilitated as needed. The corrugated steel on the buildings is painted and/or replaced as needed. The Drill Shop foundation and siding needs repair, and the Stuntz Bay smokestake needs assessment for future restoration. The property would benefit from technical assistance and a condition assessment report.
