Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 29, 1964):
Completed in 1792, this is the first lighthouse to be erected by the Federal Government. The 90-foot-high stone tower was in constant use until 1881. It is currently administered as part of Colonial National Historical Park.

Condition:
Exposed Aquia sandstone base exhibiting deterioration, exacerbated by attempts to patch with Portland cement several years ago.

In 2004, received ISTEA grant in partnership with City of Virginia Beach to re-work the ladder leading from the interior stairs to teh watchdeck and observation platform - other grant requests outstandig to address conditions described above.
