Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 13, 1962):
Built in 1771, this is the oldest university building and, until 1832, the only structure on the campus: the structure contained dormitory rooms, lecture and recitation rooms, the chapel, the library, and the dining hall. It is also significant for its association with Horace Mann (1796-1859), one of the founders of the American system of free public school, who graduated from Brown University in 1819.

Brown University owns the Landmark.
