Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 19, 1960):
Significant in Admiral Farragut's 1864 naval battle that opened Mobile Bay to the Union Navy and sealed off the port of Mobile to Confederate shipping.
Condition:
Slow but steady deterioration of the fort's masonry. This condition is more severe in some areas than others, but is present throughout the fort. Water leaking through the brickwork is the primary cause of this deterioration.
