Constructed in the mid 17th century, this is one of the oldest houses in the British Colonies. It was built by Adam Thoroughgood (c. 1705-1740), who arrived in the Colony as an indentured servant and rose to become a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses.

In 2004, the City of Virginia Beach received a federal Save America's Treasures matching grant in the amount of $ 150,000 to repair moisture damage to the exterior.
