Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 9, 1960):
This was the Capital of Virginia (1699-1799) and the home of the College of William and Mary, chartered in 1693. Restoration of the district, begun in 1927, has recreated the atmosphere of 18th century Williamsburg.

Condition:
The large in-house maintenance staff has specialized skills in the preservation/maintenance of historic structures. Two full-time architectural conservators oversee the maintenance activities and conduct condition assessments and conservation treatments on the structures.
