Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
Completed in 1827 shortly after his death, this is regarded as one of architect Thomas Jefferson's masterpieces. Dominating the university he founded, Jefferson's design was adapted from the Pantheon of ancient Rome. The Rotunda was largely reconstructed after a fire in 1895.
