Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 24, 1967):
Constructed in 1749, this is perhaps the finest example in the country of a Spanish presidio. Spanish soldiers were garrisoned here to protect nearby missions; this post later played an important role in Mexican revolutionary efforts against Spain.

Condition:
The National Historic Landmark is in excellent condition.
