Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 24, 1968):
This rambling, 40-room clapboard house was the home and official headquarters of Royal Governor Benning Wentworth from 1753 until his death in 1770. Constructed in three stages (ca. 1695, 1730, and 1750), the house provides an interesting development of colonial architectural styles.

Condition:
The house suffers from severe moisture problems, which have resulted in decay, structural damage, and repeated paint failure.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
The building needs corrective perimeter drainage, a humidistat-controlled furnace and dehumidifiers, foundation and exterior stonework repairs, drain and gutter repairs, waterproofing membranes in the cellar, and exterior repainting. A National Park Service Challenge Cost Share Grant has been awarded to address some of the major drainage issues, but this will not be sufficient to address all of the repairs necessary.
