Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 24, 1968):
This well preserved and rare example of a substantial colonial prison building served as the York County jail from c. 1720 to c. 1879. It was built in four phases, including construction of its original stone cell portion around 1720.

Condition:
The Old York Gaol is in excellent condition.

Development of the area surrounding the Old Gaol has increased the visual clutter from overhead utility wires.
