Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 24, 1968):
This small one-story frame structure was built in 1881 by John Burroughs, noted naturalist and conservationist, within the yard of his "Riverby" estate overlooking the Hudson. It served as his retreat, a place where he could escape from domestic noise and turmoil in order to read and write.

Condition:
The building was constructed without a foundation, and the support piers are deteriorating to the point that the frame of the structure is becoming distorted. The building is part of a 14 1/2 acre estate that contains other John Burrough structures, including the main house, as well as several buildings constructed by John's son, Julian. Although these buildings and surrounding land are considered to contribute to the sense of the property during John Burrough's lifetime, they are not included in the Landmark listing.

No changes since the last report.
