Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 7, 1973):
This coastal city, the second oldest town in the state, is marked by a distinctive style of Southern architecture, different from that of Savannah and Charleston. Structures in the district date from the early 18th to mid-19th century; houses have 2-story porticoes or verandas, and airy, open interiors.

Condition:
The landmark is in good condition.

The Historic Preservation Plan was updated completed June 2008.
