Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
Established in 1867 to protect workers for the Union Pacific Railroad, this fort was home of the Pawnee scout battalion in 1871. Troops from the fort participated in the Sioux War of 1876.

Condition:
The majority of the structures in this district are in good condition. Three buildings are scheduled for rehabilitation in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

Proposed housing privatization may have negative implications for the long-term preservation of the district.
