Statement of Significance (as of designation - September 20, 2006):
This site is nationally significant as the best preserved example of a rare prehistoric engineering feat—a long-distance canoe canal. The Mud Lake Canal has the potential to provide nationally significant information of major scientific importance about seasonal movements of people, the development of social complexity, aboriginal engineering ability and accomplishments, and the paramount importance of waterways in the pre-European contact period in Florida and the southeastern United States.
