Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 11, 1971):
Constructed 1812-1814, this church was erected on the site of the American French Academy, a theater which was destroyed by fire in 1811. Designed to serve both as an Episcopal parish church and as a monument to the 72 people who died in the fire, it is one of America's earliest and most distinctive Greek Revival churches.

Condition:
No new threats. Building envelope is sealed, new HVAC installed. Two phases of restoration complete as of May 10, 2006.

Remaining work. Fire suppression system, new plumbinig, site grading and drainage; damp proofing basement; repointing interior brick, some interior floor repair, point research replaster and paint, pew restoration, finishes, exterior landscape brick and iron wall restoration, interior detailing and pew cushions, lights, carpet.
