Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 15, 1970):
The church at Mission San Luis Rey de Francia (1798) is perhaps the finest existing example of a California mission church as well as mission complex. This, the third church at the mission, was erected between 1811 and 1815. In 1893, the Catholic Church rededicated the mission as a Franciscan college, a function it continues to serve.
