Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 7, 1976):
With a 400' tower rising from its center, this vast complex (1922-32) full of light and natural ventilation was designed as a "classical skyscraper." Bertram Grovenor Goodhue (1869-1924) was among the first American architects to develop a "modernist" architectural vocabulary for an original native style.
