Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 15, 1970):
Completed in 1816, this is a very well preserved, unrestored example of a small adobe church, notable for its original decorations, including numerous superb religious paintings.

Condition:
With an estimated 200,000 pilgrims and visitors annually, the vast majority of these visits occur during Holy Week, the interior of the building is in fairly good condition. The exterior of the building has visible cracks in the stucco and the roof is in need of repair/replacement.

Nothing has changed since last report in 2006.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
It is recommended that a condition assessment report be prepared for the site to include the roof, walls, and the stucco that is currently on the building. The site stewards are encouraged to consider technical and funding assistance from the National Park Service through its Heritage Partnerships Program as well as through the Challenge Cost Share Program.
