Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
This large circular, domed mausoleum is the resting place of William McKinley (1843-1901), the 25th President of the United States (1897-1901). His election in 1896 began an era of Republican dominance and also of American expansion in the Caribbean and Far East.

Continue to seek funding to restore the main exterior staircase. As the concrete deteriorates the rebar is exposed to the elements and the resulting rust causes the support structure to weaken further. The main staircase will also then need to be caulked to keep water out. Several areas under the staircase are eroding causing shifts for the granite stair treads in a few places.

The rest of the building and grounds are well cared for and in excellent condition. The basement is used for tours and has resulted from some areas being maintained and cleaned up that were not previously maintained. Fans are being used to draw up the heat that is generated beneath the stairwell which incurs no heating costs for the building and provides better circulation.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
The State Historic Preservation Office is considering approval of high density foam to support the staircase by filling the cavity under ths steps.
