Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 16, 2009):
Laboratories (the latter named Biology Building before 1983) are nationally significant as one of the most important works of mid-twentieth-century American modernism and of Louis Isadore Kahn, the internationally influential architect. The importance of the Richards and Goddard buildings project was recognized nearly universally by the American architectural community from almost the moment of the inception of its design in 1957. This project first brought Kahn to broad recognition by the American (and international) public.
